Launched in 2018 as a social enterprise, Kazi Yetu is based in Tanzania and aims to improve the East African tea market, which is one of the world’s largest but has historically been locked into producing low-cost commodity teas. By working with co-ops of smallholder tea farms and eventually opening their own processing facility in Dar es Salaam (staffed fully by local women), Kazi Yetu (meaning “our work” in Swahili) has been able to increase income for farmers and offer training to continually improve quality.

On a trip to the United States almost 30 years ago, our company founder was pleasantly surprised to see so many people drinking iced tea with their food. Upon his return to Japan, he embarked on the mission of creating a bottled tea, with a ‘real tea’ taste, that paired well with all food. He wanted to avoid the necessity of added sugar, artificial ingredients or added preservatives that would mask the authentic taste of real brewed tea. The search for a great unsweetened tea began! After traveling the world tasting many tea varieties, a black tea from the Indonesian island of Java was chosen, and thus Tejava, “Tea from Java” was born.
